Scarlett Johansson: I'm Still Not Over Ryan Reynolds

Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reyolds have both moved on romantically since their shocking split in 2010 -- she' currently dating New York City ad exec Nate Naylor and he's with actress Blake Lively -- but that doesn't mean Johansson is completely over their divorce.

NASA photo captures 12-mile-high dust devil on Mars (+video)

A humongous dust devil churned on Mars last month, as seen in a photo taken by NASA's Mars?Reconnaissance?Orbiter.

A gigantic dust devil races across the surface of Mars in a stunning new photo snapped by a NASA spacecraft.

NASA's?Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter?(MRO) captured the 12 mile-high (20 kilometer) twister as it whirled its way through the Amazonis Planitia region of northern Mars on March 14. Despite its towering height, the dust devil is just 210 feet (64 meters) wide, researchers said.

The plume's shadow is also clearly visible in the new image, as are some topographic features on the Red Planet's complex surface.

Dust devils occur on both Earth and?Mars. They are spinning columns of air, made visible by the dirt they suck off the ground. Unlike tornados,?dust devils?usually form on clear days when the ground soaks up heat from the sun. If conditions are right, heated air near the surface may begin to rotate as it rises through small pockets of cooler air just above it.

Just as on Earth, Martian winds are fueled by solar heating. Though Mars is now near aphelion ? the time of Martian year when the Red Planet is farthest from the sun ? it still receives enough solar energy to drive dust devils across its surface.

The new image was taken during Mars' late northern spring, two weeks short of the northern summer solstice? a time when the ground in the northern mid-latitudes is being heated most strongly by the sun, researchers said.

MRO has been examining Mars with six science instruments since arriving at the Red Planet in March 2006. The spacecraft continues to provide valuable insights into the planet's ancient environment and how processes such as wind, meteorite impacts and seasonal frosts are continuing to affect the surface of Mars today, NASA officials said.

NASA launched MRO in September 2005. The $720 million mission is NASA's youngest Mars orbiter flight to date, but it has beamed more data to Earth than all other interplanetary missions combined.

5&5: News and Science Highlights from March 2012 ? Health ...

April 11, 2012 at 4:03 pm | Posted in 5&5 News & Science | Leave a comment

Transgenerational actions of environmental compounds on reproductive disease. Deliberate study of transgenerational effects of exposure to chemical mixtures, plastics, jet fuel, dioxin and pesticides, finding sperm death and premature female puberty.

Science highlight of the month: Scientists publish review describing regulatory testing as unfit for EDCs. In the largest review to date of studies examining low-dose effects of chemicals, scientists have concluded regulatory testing for chemical safety does not effectively examine the potential health risks of endocrine disruptors. Summaries of the findings in Yale360 and Scientific American.

In an editorial in Environmental Health Perspectives, Linda Birnbaum, Head of the US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, says the question is no longer whether nonmonotonic dose responses are real. ?Instead, it is which dose?response shapes should be expected for specific environmental chemicals and under what specific circumstances.?

Exposure to Phthalates and Phenols during Pregnancy and Offspring Size at Birth. Consistent with findings of a previous study, observed evidence of an inverse association of 2,5-DCP and a positive association of BP3 with male birth weight.

Effects of Chronic Exposure to an Environmentally Relevant Mixture of BFRs on the thyroid and reproductive systems of adult male rats. Exposure to three commercial brominated diphenyl ethers, formulated to mimic the relative congener levels in house dust, affected liver and thyroid physiology but not male reproductive parameters.

Early breast development in girls after prenatal exposure to non-persistent pesticides. Evidence that prenatal exposure to currently approved pesticides may cause earlier breast development in girls, possibly from aromatisation of androgens.

Going to Extreme Lengths to Purge Household Toxins. A subtle and easily misunderstood NYT piece, not about middle-class paranoia, but about how inadequate regulatory control over chemical exposures in consumer goods leads to people to going to almost bizarre lengths to ?shop our way to some place which protects us?.

?Green? cleaners without cancer-causing ingredients. The Environmental Protection Agency has found that chemicals in household cleaners are three times more likely to cause cancer than air pollution. So what?s the alternative? (And so did the Silent Spring Institute. What, as reported in Forbes, did industry think of the institute?s research? ?This study presents a clear example of biased, advocacy-based research,? says William Troy, Ph.D., Scientific Advisor to the International Fragrance Association North America.)

News highlight of the month. What is really making us fat? Man-made chemicals present in homes, schools, offices, cars and food are probably contributing to the sharp rise in obesity and diabetes in western societies, according to a review of scientific literature. The Atlantic recounts various perspectives on the problem and the UK Independent provides a basic overview of the review findings. Download the report here.

Children?s car seat makers to eliminate PVC and halogenated flame-retardants. Britax and Orbit, two major manufacturers of children?s car seats and pushchairs have pledged to eliminate polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and brominated and chlorinated flame retardants from their products.

Campbell?s to end use of BPA in can linings. Campbell?s Soup Co. spokesman Anthony Sanzio said the company has been working on alternatives for five years and will make the transition as soon as ?feasible alternatives are available.?

How those pesticides persist even when you wash your fruit and veg. Washing fruit and vegetables does not remove chemical pesticide residues, tests commissioned by Government food watchdogs show.

Settling for real estate foreclosures | Real Estate Law Blog

Foreclosures are legal procedures that go along with homeowners who can no longer afford to make their mortgage payments on their homes. Being foreclosed on is an upsetting and stressful process, but sometimes it seems that the circumstance is unavoidable. It often happens unfortunately or unpredictability from a variety of reasons. Being laid off, inability to continue making payments because of medical conditions, problems with co-owner, excessive debts and other mounting bills, transfer of job to another place far away are some of the reasons why people opt for foreclosures.

The people who are specialists in buying foreclosures prefer to buy these assets before the proceedings get real. Foreclosure proceedings vary. In mortgage situations, the seller can stay in their homes for a year before moving out. The seller has every right to withdraw the sale at any time, in the event he or she has managed to gather the required funds to prevent the sale. Buy homes that have been foreclosed on is taking advantage of the seller?s misfortune.??

Maureen Anderson: My Harshest Critic: How a Blistering Review of My First Book Silenced the Critic Within

I always imagined getting my first book reviewed by a big newspaper. I had heard many wonderful things about Staying the Course: A Runner's Toughest Race, the memoir I wrote for Dick Beardsley, by the time it was written up in the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Dick's a marathon champion turned farm accident survivor and recovering drug addict. The reviewer had a lot of respect for Dick, but thought someone else should have written his story.

"He deserves a better book. This one is filled with exclamation points and italicized words instead of passion or insight. It's a soulless, connect-the-dots portrait."

Ouch.

Writing Staying the Course had been a mystical experience for me. I was filled with such purpose and peace it was as if magic dust had been sprinkled on my computer. Everything I'm good at, everything I've ever loved doing, I put to use. It broke my heart to turn in the manuscript because I wouldn't have it to work on anymore.

Then this. We continued hearing from readers who loved the book and were inspired to change their lives because of it. It didn't help. They say there's no such thing as bad publicity. I doubted "they" are people whose work is trashed in the media. It was like taking years to build a dream home, finally moving in, and then spending one night there. Before I could get back from the grocery store the next morning someone had set fire to it. There was nothing left but ashes.

I did okay at first. Part of me felt like a real artist. To have gotten to the point where people were taking shots -- at least I was getting noticed. I had a new appreciation for those who work in the public arena. I was proud of taking a risk, proud of doing my best. I told myself that what anyone thought was really none of my business.

Then it sunk in. For a couple of days I pulled the review out and read it over and over, as if memorizing it could take the sting out of the "I can't believe this happened" feeling. It didn't work. I sobbed. My husband's patience was tested. Better equipped to solve problems than to sit with feelings, he had difficulty understanding the way to help was just to be there. Our daughter Katie -- then seven -- was unmoved as well. "You think that's bad?" she exclaimed. "A girl in my class said the snacks you made taste like laundry soap. And she's tasted laundry soap so she knows!" The child was punished -- no snack privileges for a week. Ironically Darrell soothed this time, wishing he could take away the reviewer's snack privileges, too.

The thing was, just because the review hurt didn't mean it was wrong. Maybe I wasn't a very good writer. You could take everything anyone ever said about the book. What got printed was what this person said. Some resume.

A few months later a writing coach critiqued an essay I'd written about my feelings on Kate's first day of kindergarten. She thought the piece was "remarkably depressing." There's no lesson learned, she added, no resolution to a problem. An essay should inspire, she continued, and this one didn't.

There it was. Two independent sources. My writing sucked.

Or did it? Everyone else who read the kindergarten essay loved it. I was proud of it, and that hadn't changed. I thanked the coach for her assessment, and submitted it to someone else that evening. Before long, the editor of Spirituality & Health magazine was on the phone, wanting to publish it. "It's wonderful!" he said. "One of our editors read it and said, 'You're going to love this one' -- and she doesn't even have kids... " The piece appeared that spring, a three-page spread complete with photos.

Then it clicked. What I'd been taught in sales training: SWSWSW. Some will, some won't, so what. So the person who reviewed my book didn't like it. So what. My newfound detachment helped me realize he was right about a couple of things. The book is filled with exclamation points and italicized words, and I would go easier on those if I was writing it today.

Rejections still hurt, and I'm still at the mercy of the person reviewing my latest pitch. Maybe it will sell, maybe it won't. I'm not the only one writing my life story, of course. But like a true journalist, I'll keep experimenting... and reporting back on the results.

A Few Practical Plans For Home Improvement | New Topics

Almost everyone has a list of things they want to improve in their home, yet there are times in which it is a struggle to pick the one to start on first. Having a limited amount of time, as well as a limited budget, can make you reluctant to think about redoing a room, getting a new roof or installing new carpeting. On the other hand, you can always launch the process with something that does not stress you out and do not forget that even the smaller things on your list, for example cleaning up your backyard or painting the exterior could increase the value of your home.

It could be quite a shock to see the decrease in your energy costs as well as how comfortable your house is by placing a ceiling fan in your room, yet it isn?t a huge home upgrade project. Ceiling fans can be a competent substitute for the days that aren?t too terribly hot, but you might desire to hang onto your air conditioning if you reside in an extremely hot climate. In spite of having the air conditioner still run, you might possibly turn it on low while the fan in the ceiling supports the air circulation. You can draw the warm air back down to the floor level in colder temperatures with reversible ceiling fans which is another benefit. Another method to have your house be a healthier place to live for your loved ones, is to remove all the poison that you can from the walls, water or air that you can. One might desire to examine their house, or have a professional come and do it, to figure out if there are risks like radon, mold, lead and other poisons hiding in the drinking water or air that you breathe. A highly toxic substance, for example radon, will need a knowledgeable person to rid your house of it so it will be free of danger. Projects such as removing mold or improving the overall air quality of your home are a little easier. Air cleaners in all of the rooms of your home can make a big difference, and are especially useful for anyone who has allergies. Filters that clean your water could be helpful as well in purifying the water you take showers with and drink.

One of the most excellent options for improving the outside look of your home is to add a new driveway. If you either do not have a driveway or the existing one has a million cracks, getting a new one can be a revitalizing change. The foremost thing you need to figure out is where you wish for your driveway to be. Make sure that it is at least a few feet away from any nearby trees, as roots can come up and cause problems. Furthermore, you want to make sure that your new driveway has the capacity to fit larger vehicles therefore it is essential for you to consider making it more expedient for yourself or anyone stopping by.

The previously mentioned home improvement suggestions can provide you with a more comfortable and energy efficient home, that also has a new look and is worth more money. For a home improvement project to succeed you actually need to take that all-important step and start! Get the house of your dreams this year by putting together a plan, getting what you need together or calling the right contractor.

Spain bond auction raises debt concerns

(AP) ? Spain's latest effort to bring its public finances under control failed to reassure investors Wednesday and the country's borrowing costs rose sharply in the secondary bond markets.

In an auction of medium-term debt, its first test of investor sentiment since last Friday's ?27 billion ($36 billion) deficit-reduction package, Spain only sold ?2.6 billion ($3.5 billion). That was at the bottom end of the ?2.5 billion to ?3.5 billion target it was looking to raise from the sales of bonds that mature in 2015, 2016 and 2020.

Spain has become the latest point of concern in Europe's debt crisis, now that Greece has got its second bailout and tensions in Italy appear to have eased as new premier Mario Monti pushes through his wide-ranging austerity and reform measures. Bailed-out Portugal also appears to be faring well ? its auctions of much-shorter debt earlier met with much more investor enthusiasm.

That concern was clearly evident in the markets where Spanish bonds are openly bought and sold. The yield on the country's ten-year bond spiked around 0.20 percentage point to 5.61 percent. A month ago, that rate was down below 4.9 percent.

The mood in the stock markets was downbeat too though the 0.8 percent decline recorded on the IBEX 35 index was as much to do with waning expectations of another monetary stimulus in the U.S. as Spain's debt problems.

The higher the yield, the more expensive it potentially is for a country to raise money on the bond markets. Last November, Spain's yield hit 6.7 percent ? close to the point where a country can no longer afford to maintain its debt and seek a bailout.

The bond sale came a day after Finance Minister Cristobal Montoro spelled out the details of the new conservative government's 2012 budget proposal to make ?27 billion in spending cuts and tax increases in order to get Spain's deficit down from 8.5 percent of gross domestic product last year to 5.3 percent this year. The cuts are being introduced at a time when unemployment stands at a euro area high of around 23 percent and the country's economy is expected to contract 1.7 percent on the year.

The government also revealed Tuesday that Spain's national debt will shoot up this year from 68.5 percent of GDP to about 80 percent.

Despite growing concerns over Spain, many analysts reckon Spain still has a viable route to avoid the same bailout fate as Greece, Ireland and Portugal. A Spanish bailout would be far more difficult for the country's partners in the eurozone as its economy is twice the size of the three countries that have needed a financial rescue.

"The auction was a little weak," said Alejandro Varela, a fund manager for Madrid brokerage Renta 4 who dismissed suggestions that the sale indicated Spain was headed toward an acute crisis.

"It's a warning sign to the government not to sit back in the process of fiscal consolidation and that although the budget has been presented it must be applied right to the end," said Varela.

He said the result was expected given the pressure that had been building up on Spain in recent weeks.

"The market is simply saying, 'hey don't try to cheat us,'" said Varela. "The budget is credible but investors want it to be carried out and that if you say you're going to cut ?27 billion then cut ?27 billion."

Juan Carlos Martinez Lazaro, economics professor at IE Business School, blamed market jitters for the auction results.

He said Spain's economic situation has not changed significantly from a month ago, when its bond yields at auctions were much lower. Now, he said, there is reason for optimism because the government has passed labor market and financial sector reforms and an austere budget.

"When there was no budget, the market was nervous and now that there is a budget the market is nervous again. There comes a point where nothing makes sense," Martinez Lazaro said, adding that the jumpiness is over how the budget cuts will unfold and days of tension will eventually fade away.

In Wednesday's auction, the average interest rate on the three-year notes was 2.89 percent, up from 2.44 percent in the last such auction on March 15. The bid to cover ratio was 2.4, half what it was in the last auction.

For the notes maturing in 2016, the yield shot up from 3.37 percent to 4.32. The bid-to-cover ratio fell from 4.1 to about 2.5 percent. The 2020 notes had an average interest rate of 5.34 percent.

Nokia Lumia 900 review - Computers|Gadgets|Games N Entertaint ...

Over the last year Nokia?s had something of a tumultuous time within the mobile industry. While still an influence to be feared within the featurephone market, their loss of presence inside the smartphone market was keenly felt. With T-Mobile?s Lumia 710 as a prelude, the Finnish giant makes a return in earnest with the Lumia 900 on AT&T?s LTE network. Its features and design are immediately attractive, but perhaps more so is the value: just $99 on-contract, or free for brand spanking new AT&T customers. Can a mix of serious design, high-end features and cost make a bold?statement?for Nokia? Let?s discover.

Nokia Lumia 900 review

Hardware

The Lumia 900 makes two impressive feats right out of the gate: the design of its hardware is both aesthetically pleasing and startlingly original. A 4.5-inch AMOLED screen sits on a tiny lip, melding right into a matte?polyurethane?body unibody. The case curves around at the left and right side but has hard edges at the top and bottom. The overall shape (if not the fabric and size) is similar to the?second-generation iPod Nano, and the grippy finish helps you to keep the phone?reassuringly?safe. Even for a phone at the larger side of the spectrum it fits comfortably in both hand and pocket, with my only complaint being the situation of the flexibility button, which i locate somewhat awkward.

Speaking of buttons, the Lumia has four, all at the right side: volume up and down, the aforementioned Power button and a far-appreciated dedicate camera button. At the front there?s only the screen, the quality Windows Phone 7 capacitive buttons and front-facing camera. At the bottom you will find a strangely placed but appreciably loud speaker, and the head houses the MicroUSB port, headphone jack and a MicroSIM tray accessible by the included key. The left is bare, and the back holds the 8-megapixel F/2.2 camera.

Nokia Lumia 900 review

The AMOLED screen is worth noting for both its strengths and weaknesses. As with every panels of this manner, it?s bright, clear and somewhat oversaturated. The resolution is somewhat?disappointing?at 800?480, especially on a screen this massive, but Windows Phone doesn?t really want greater than that. At the inside you get a speedy but somewhat limited 1.4Ghz single-core processor from Qualcomm, 16GB of internal space (no MicroSD card slot) and naturally, an AT&T 4G LTE connection.

Software

With Microsoft?s standardization, there is not loads to assert about Windows Phone 7 Mango that hasn?t been already. It?s an undeniably unique and tasty, not unlike the hardware, but when you are not a fan this?interpretation?is unlikely to sway you by some means. Inspect SlashGear?s in-depth inspect Windows Phone 7 Mango for a more detailed rundown. i am not keen on the Zune syncing software and would much prefer a basic USB mass storage alternative.

Nokia Lumia 900 review

AT&T has added some of its apps just like the account manager, AT&T U-Verse, a code scanner and AT&T Navigator, in addition to ESPN and Telephone book. All of those are easily uninstalled for people who wish, and the Nokia hardware grants you access to the company?s excellent Maps and Drive apps, though they should be downloaded from the Windows Phone Store. The shop remains one of the vital platform?s only real weaknesses; while users of the Zune,?Xbox or Games for Windows services could be quite happy, those on the lookout for the most recent in apps will not be. For instance, the Kindle and Netflix apps are present, but Pandora and Angry Birds Space aren?t (as a minimum for the instant).

However, the shortage of apps is barely an actual problem in case you have ones that you have come to depend upon that are not there. New smartphone owners (whom i believe will make up a sizable component to the Lumia 900?s ownership) will find plenty to love. To make an extended story short, if you?ve built up a catalog of dozens or hundreds of apps on iOS or Android, you?re unlikely to be satisfied. When you are already a Windows Phone user or you?re just getting at the smartphone bandwagon, there?s plenty to like.

Media and camera

The Lumia?s ?large screen and loud speaker make for a potent combination for video and music. Online videos look and sound great, provided that you remember to not cover up the speaker along with your hand while in landscape mode. Naturally this doesn?t present an issue whe using headphones, though none are supplied. Local videos are inclined to show a tiny hint of stutter when using the default player, but it?s nothing that the majority people would notice for converted or downloaded movies. That said, if you?d like truly HD video in your phone (a luxury that during my opinion is somewhat?overrated) you?d best look elsewhere.

Nokia Lumia 900 review

The rear camera takes impressively sharp photos even in lingering light, though the colour accuracy leaves lots to be desired. With the default settings colors will go from flat to?over-saturated?with a minor shift in movement or lighting.

Nokia Lumia 900 review

Low light?performance?both with and without flash is impressive, though not quite up to that at the iPhone 4, 4S and HTC?s new One X and One S phones. For snapshots or video chats the cameras are greater than adequate, and frequent shutterbugs will love the dedicated camera button.

Nokia Lumia 900 review

Signal and battery

Call quality was below stellar, though that is not uncommon for AT&T phones in my remote home. While the Lumia didn?t fare in addition to some AT&T smartphones (particularly those from Samsung) it is from the worst of the pack. Once I went to even a small local city both the call?quality?and the info speed were fine.?The?1830mAh battery lasts me an entire day of 8-9 hours of medium use with heavy music and a few surfing and web video thrown in. I?d be happier if the battery was swappable, especially if I knew i used to be venturing into considered one of AT&T?s still-rare LTE zones. You?ll still should charge the telephone every night, but you need to be capable of get through an entire workday with none issues ? as long as you avoid excessive video or games.

Nokia Lumia 900 review

Wrap-up

The Nokia Lumia 900 is in reality the very best Windows phones we?ve ever tested as much as this point. When you can see past the limited app collection of the platform and the dearth of a few cutting-edge features like a 720p screen or NFC, there is a good deal to recommend. Those already?committed?to Android, iOS or Blackberry are unlikely to be swayed, but new smartphone buyers should seriously consider the phone? and never simply because of its looks or software.

Nokia Lumia 900 review

At $99.99 for returning AT&T customers, the Lumia 900 is tempting for any smartphone aficionado. At zero dollars for brand new customers (or $49 in case you brave the Wal-Mart aisles) it is a downright steal. an outstanding and trendy build, reliable software and perfect value should put this phone to your short list, whatever you?re currently using. You may consider LTE as an advantage, since AT&T would certainly add many more markets over a two-year contract period.

The Lumia 900 can be available starting on April 8th. Take a look at our hands-on video below.

GOP nomination all but assured, Mitt Romney zooms in on Obama

Primary wins Tuesday for Mitt Romney in Wisconsin, Maryland, and the District of Columbia make it mathematically improbable that any of his GOP rivals can capture the nomination. That frees Romney and party leaders to train their fire on President Obama.

Ninety-one days after the Iowa caucuses kicked off the 2012 political season, Mitt Romney on Tuesday night all but locked up the Republican presidential nomination, sweeping the Maryland, Wisconsin, and District of Columbia primaries in a show of electoral strength that indicates his party is closing ranks behind him for the coming general election campaign.

Mr. Romney won at least 83 delegates in Tuesday?s contests, according to the Associated Press. That gives him 655 of the 1,144 needed for nomination. Rick Santorum has 278, Newt Gingrich 135, and Ron Paul 51.

Romney?s closest rival, ex-Pennsylvania Senator Santorum, would need to win 80 percent of the remaining delegates to clinch the nomination, according to the AP. Given that most of the state contests to come award their delegates proportionately in some manner, that?s a close-to-impossible task.

These numbers mean that there is a 97 percent chance of Romney?s wrapping up the nomination prior to the GOP national convention in Tampa, Fla,, according to the statistical prediction system of New York Times polling analyst Nate Silver.

That means that Wednesday could be considered the first day of the general election campaign, with presumptive nominee Romney training his rhetorical fire on President Obama instead of fading GOP rivals.

In remarks to cheering supporters on Tuesday night, Romney himself compared his dream of an American ?opportunity society? with Obama?s more government-centered ideas.

?There is a basic choice before us,? said Romney in his Milwaukee appearance. ?Our different visions for America are the product of our values and our life experiences.?

This pivoting toward the final contest could also be seen in the announcement that Romney and the Republican National Committee will begin a joint fund-raising effort.

The establishment of a joint party-presumptive nominee committee will allow top donors to write checks as large as $75,000 per person, according to The Wall Street Journal, which reported the move. It shows that Republicans are anxious to begin amassing cash to compete with what they assume will be a well-funded Obama effort.?

Romney?s performance among different groups of voters in Wisconsin shows the logic behind this shift in party focus. The ex-Massachusetts governor performed better than he has in the past among evangelicals, the relatively less well-off, and strong tea-party supporters, notes a report in the Fix political blog of the Washington Post.

Romney won 38 percent of evangelicals, for instance. (Rick Santorum won 43 percent.) Romney beat Santorum by 11 percentage points among GOP voters making less than $50,000, and by two percentage points among tea-party adherents.

Still, Santorum vowed to fight on.

?This isn?t the time to sit down and rest,? he told supporters in a Tuesday night speech from his home state of Pennsylvania, which holds the next big primary on the GOP agenda.

Santorum did not mention Romney by name. He said only that he faced competitors whose values were written on an Etch-A-Sketch.

?We don?t win by moving to the middle. We win by getting people in the middle to move to us and move this country forward.... This isn?t half time.... It?s time to go out there and fight,? said Santorum.

    Doping expert quits on 'muzzling'

A leading scientist says he is resigning from an expert body on biological passports in sport because he is being "muzzled".

Dr Michael Ashenden accused the anti-doping movement of fostering a culture of "omerta" - a term describing the pact of silence in the mafia.

He said the imposition of a new confidentiality clause in his contract was an attempt to silence him.

Since 2008 he has been an independent reviewer of blood profiles in cycling.

The governing bodies of professional cycling and international athletics extensively use the passport.

The Union Cycliste International (UCI), which governs cycling, thanked Dr Ashenden for his contribution to the sport but made no direct comment on the circumstances of his resignation. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), which oversees athletics, acknowledged that Dr Ashenden had declined an offer to be part of their expert panel.

Dr Ashenden is regarded as one of the world's foremost experts on blood doping and the athlete's biological passport. He has acted as an expert witness in high profile cases, including those of Lance Armstrong and Alberto Contador.

Both cycling and athletics have recently handed over management of the biological passport to a newly created Athlete Passport Management Unit (APMU), based at the Swiss Laboratory for Doping Analyses (LAD) in Lausanne.

The APMU has issued new contracts to its experts, with much tighter confidentiality clauses.

Dr Ashenden says his new contract requires him to get permission before offering personal opinions on any matter related to his role interpreting blood profiles. He says the APMU are "trying to manage the message".

The scientist told the BBC: "It seems to me that too much emphasis is being placed on controlling what the media are told. There should be nothing to hide, so why stop the experts from talking?"

The BBC contacted the APMU for comment several times, but we have yet to receive a response from the unit.

In recent years, anti-doping organisations have encouraged athletes to share information about fellow athletes they believe are doping, even offering reduced sanctions to those who help convict their peers.

"Although it's sometimes difficult and personally damaging for me to speak out, it's much more difficult for an athlete to betray a peer.

    What is a biological passport?

The Athlete's Biological Passport (ABP) is an electronic record of blood and urine samples taken several times a year over the course of a competitor's career. Cycling, athletics and rowing have promoted the passport as nearly impossible to circumvent.

Supporters say that by measuring a range of biological variables such as hematocrit and haemoglobin, scientists can rapidly detect indirect changes that indicate doping. The traditional method involves directly detecting a substance in a sample.

When experts look at blood profiles they are able to see minute changes that can indicate that the athlete is trying to manipulate their oxygen-carrying capacity. The scientists do not have to prove exactly what is being used. Being able to see evidence of manipulation is enough to secure a conviction.

Professional cycling has been associated with widespread doping. Many supporters of the ABP say that, since its introduction in 2008, it has helped the sport become cleaner and more competitive.

Critics argue the passport is expensive and can be beaten. They say authorities are afraid to prosecute athletes in case they lose in court and the passport concept is damaged.

    Text: Matt McGrath

"I've personally asked athletes to take that leap of faith, and I'd be mortified if I ever failed to have the same moral courage I've asked of those athletes," Dr Ashenden explained.

"We constantly struggle to overcome their omerta, their refusal to tell us what is happening in their sport. We want them to blow the whistle on their colleagues. And yet here Lausanne is imposing its own 'omerta'.

"In fact, it goes one step further and writes legally binding contracts to stop their experts from speaking out. It's hypocritical, and suggests they talk the talk but won't walk the walk."

Information from the athlete's biological passport will also play a significant role in anti-doping at the London Olympics, with the profiles of athletes, swimmers and cyclists and rowers being monitored.

But Dr Ashenden has been critical of the way the passport is held up as a panacea for doping.

He has carried out experiments showing that it is possible to cheat the passport system by taking micro doses of the blood-boosting drug EPO.

The doping expert points to the IAAF, arguing that, despite having a passport programme in place for several years, as far as he is aware they have never sanctioned anybody as a result of their profiles.

"It's not the tool, it's the execution that worries me. That's the reason why I believe it's important media have the opportunity to ask hard questions. Unless they're well informed about how the passport operates, they won't know which questions to ask," he told the BBC.

"It's not about criticising the passport, it's about getting it better."

A spokesperson for the IAAF told BBC News that it had "made enormous progress on the Athletes Biological Passport and soon this... will be noticeable to the public and to the media.

"However, we cannot comment yet on the actual state of the eventual cases. All the sanctions are decided from the national federations and the IAAF gives the approval. Regarding Dr Ashenden, the IAAF has officially offered him to be part of the IAAF ABP Expert Panel but he declined."

Dr Ashenden objects strongly to a paragraph that says he must seek permission before he can talk about "any aspect of the role as APMU member" for up to eight years after he is terminated as a member.

"Anti-doping exists to protect clean athletes, not the reputation of the anti-doping movement. When push comes to shove, my actions will always be in the interests of clean athletes, even if that means I ruffle feathers by highlighting some inconvenient truths.

"And just because I serve on their panel, it doesn't give them the right to silence me."
