At some point in our lives, practically all of us have said something along the lines of, ?I think I?m going to grow a little herb garden.? The idea just seems so lovely, and fresh herbs smell delightful and make everything taste better. The actual percentage of us who follow through on that grand green idea, however, is admittedly pretty low. So today, we?ve pulled together some points of inspiration to get you flexing that green thumb.
First, there?s the simple, classic indoor herb garden like the one show above. Depending on what fragrances you?d like to introduce into your kitchen, living room, or whichever space will be hosting the herbs, and depending on what sorts of dishes you?d like to prepare with them, select three or four types to start. Cook a lot of Italian food? Consider oregano, basil and chives to get started.
Seed packets and starter kits are available at most grocery stores, home improvement megaplexes like Home Depot and Lowes, and in the garden section at Target and Wal-Mart; gathering up all the goods you need can be as simple as taking five minutes to walk down a different aisle during a typical weekly errand. Once you?ve followed the instructions and watched your herbs start to grow after letting the kiddos help with the planting, consider asking for their help in pulling together recipes and preparing meals. Helping with an herb garden can actually be a great first step in teaching your kids where food comes from and striking up conversations about how the farm-to-table cycle works in the world at large.
If cooking isn?t part of the plan, consider a terrarium. Container gardening has risen in popularity in recent years, and for good reason: live indoor greenery isn?t just pretty to look at, but it also quite literally purifies the air we breathe, and its presence alone has been said to decrease stress. Even if you?re worried that you can?t make anything grow no matter what you do, companies like James Modern create and ship pre-made terrariums to take the guesswork completely out of the equation (and when truly in doubt, there?s always cactus).
Whether you end up consuming the fruit of your labor or not, giving your children at least a partial obligation to care for a living thing ? even something as simple as a pot of herbs ? can go a long way toward instilling confidence, discipline and a sense of responsibility, contribution and self-worth. Considering the elements of fresher air, stress-reducing home decor and maybe a little something extra come dinnertime, and that?s time well spent.

Tel Aviv University launches new archaeological dig in biblical city of Azekah
This summer, Tel Aviv University's Sonia and Marco Nadler Institute of Archaeology is adding another excavation to their already expansive list of seven active digs. Azekah, a city of the ancient kingdom of Judah that features prominently in the Bible both as a main border city and the fortification which towers above the Ellah valley is the site of the legendary battle between David and giant Goliath. The new dig will be led by TAU's Prof. Oded Lipschits, Dr. Yuval Gadot, and Prof. Manfred Oeming from Heidelberg University, Germany.
The Assyrian king Sennacherib described Azekah as "an eagle's nest ... with towers that project to the sky like swords." The Judahite stronghold bordered the land of the Philistines and was strategically positioned for military action and trade. This culturally significant city could hold the answer to historically significant riddles about the development of the Kingdom of Judah, the relationship between Judah and its neighbors, and the Judahite culture.
The dig's first season will run from July 15 August 24, 2012. Registration is now open to volunteers for the first season of what the directors call a truly international dig, with partner universities from all over the world. "In every square that we are excavating, there will be participants from all over the world," says Dr. Gadot. "It's a great way to get to know new people and gain valuable experience." More details about the new dig are available at www.azekah.com.
Beneath the layers of destruction
After years of excavation at Ramat Rahel near Jerusalem, the heart of the Kingdom of Judah, the researchers are looking to Azekah for insight into what life was like on the periphery of that ancient kingdom. "We are asking questions about the history of Judah from the westernmost border," says Prof. Lipschits, noting that the main Philistine Kingdom of Gat was located just a few kilometres to the west of Azekah. The site probably served as the setting for the tale of David and Goliath, the story of an unlikely Judahite hero who overcame the Philistine's champion warrior, because Azikah was truly "a meeting point of the two different cultures," he explains.
Beyond its cultural significance, Azekah was also a gateway to the Judahite kingdom, positioned along the main roads leading from the coastal plains to the Judean Hills at the heart of the kingdom. Although the city flourished for millennia, its natural riches and strategic position made it an inviting target for foreign powers.
The researchers hope that extraordinary findings await them beneath the destruction layers of the city, which was conquered in 701 B.C.E. by the Assyrians and in 586 B.C.E. by the Babylonians. When a site is abandoned, the people who once lived there would usually collect their gatherings and move on. But this wasn't possible in the wake of a sudden and catastrophic event, such as war, says Dr. Gadot. Under the destruction layer, cultural artefacts are well-preserved, and there could also be remnants of an invasion, like a siege ramp, like the one that was found in the Judahite city of Lachich.
An international dig
The Lautenschlger Azekah Expedition is a continuation of a scientific cooperation started in 2003 between Tel Aviv University and Heidelberg Universities at the excavation Ramat Rahel. The new excavation of Azekah brings together a team of international scholars, students, and volunteers. Participants in the dig need an optimistic attitude and an adventurous spirit, say the excavation directors.
Over the course of the dig, volunteers will be living and working together in the nearby Nes Harim guest house in the north of Israel, which belongs to the Jewish National Fund. All participants will be invited to attend lectures and cultural and social activities. Students can also complete classes for university credit.
"This is a very multi-national experience, and the friendships that people build are truly amazing," says Dr. Gadot. He adds that the project is looking forward to accepting volunteers who are new to the field. Team spirit is the most important qualification, he says, and students of archaeology, enthusiasts, and adventurers are all welcome.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) ? It's not so easy any more for the Los Angeles Lakers to push around the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Kevin Durant scored 33 points, Russell Westbrook added 19 and the Thunder beat the Lakers 100-85 Thursday night to head into the All-Star break tied for the league's best record.
The Thunder won their 12th straight home game and denied Los Angeles the chance to head into the midseason break with back-to-back statement wins on the road. The Lakers had won at defending NBA champion Dallas a night earlier and were trying to follow it by knocking off the other half of last year's West finals.
"It's a regular game for us," Durant said, downplaying any significance of a midseason victory.
"Of course, we respect those guys and they're champions and they've won multiple rings but it's another game for us. You're just trying to get better every single day."
Oklahoma City and Miami both have NBA-leading 27-7 records at the break. The Lakers are 20-14 and sitting in fifth place in the West.
"It's cool that we're winning games but we can't be complacent," Durant said.
"We've been on a good roll lately. We've got to just keep working hard. It's not over yet. We're glad we're going into the break with some wins but I think it's important for us to come out of the break with some energy and some momentum."
Kobe Bryant scored 24 points but went 7 for 24 from the field for Los Angeles. Pau Gasol had 22 points and nine rebounds.
The Thunder pulled away in the second half to win their second in a row against the Lakers, who won eight of the teams' previous nine regular-season meetings and knocked Oklahoma City out of the 2010 playoffs in the first round.
"They did a great job. They took advantage of opportunities when they presented themselves, jumped out to a good cushion and we could never get the game back in balance," Bryant said.
The Lakers, once able to use their size advantage against Oklahoma City, struggled to get those same inside baskets against the remade Thunder interior of NBA blocks leader Serge Ibaka and Kendrick Perkins.
Center Andrew Bynum started out 2 for 12 before finally hitting three in a row midway through the fourth quarter. His two-handed slam got the Lakers within 81-74 with 7 minutes remaining, only for Oklahoma City to come right back by scoring the next seven points on a three-point play by Westbrook and dunks by Harden and Perkins.
Los Angeles didn't get any closer than nine after that.
"Going into this game, we really wanted to keep them out of the paint, keep them away from the basket and rebound the shot," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "Just give them one shot ? one and done, and get out and run."
Harden scored 16 and Ibaka added 11 points and 13 rebounds for Oklahoma City, which limited L.A. to 39 percent shooting while making 47 percent of its own shots.
"We have to work too hard to get points going up against defenses that are set and double-teams all the time," Bryant said. "Having a little bit more movement, it'll free Andrew up, free Pau up, free myself up to where I don't have to work against two guys all the time."
Bryant said he didn't have any expectations for where the Lakers would be at the midpoint of their first season under Mike Brown and considered himself "neutral" about their play so far.
He had made waves recently by criticizing management about leaving Gasol to wonder whether he'd be traded, but general manager Mitch Kupchak didn't back down.
"Just trucking along," Bryant said. "As you can see, we still have things we have to figure out about how we're going to play and how we're going to execute.
"It's going to take time, especially in this type of season when we don't have any practice time."
The Thunder emerged ahead 46-43 after a closely contested first half, with Westbrook connecting on a 3-pointer from the left wing with 0.8 seconds left and Durant stealing Bynum's inbounds pass along the left baseline before hitting a jumper before the buzzer.
Bynum and World Peace, his intended target, walked off the court discussing what went wrong.
The Lakers would never lead again.
Durant converted a three-point play and Daequan Cook hit a 3-pointer during a burst of eight straight points for Oklahoma City midway through the third quarter, and the lead stretched to 71-58 when Cook followed Harden's slam by hitting a right wing jumper with 1:43 left in the period.
"We didn't close the half off well at all, and then the third quarter they were more playing their game and we were making it a little easy for them by not moving the ball, by the ball getting stuck on one side of the floor and settling for jumpers," Gasol said.
"They just came out and ran. That's what they do."
NOTES: After looking back at the video, Brown said he thought a foul by Dallas' Brendan Haywood on Gasol in the final minute Wednesday should have been a flagrant foul. "I'm sure the league has seen it and I'm sure that they'll take whatever action they think is necessary for it. That definitely was not just a normal foul or a regular foul," Brown said. ... Durant was a late addition to the 3-Point Contest at the All-Star game, giving him a chance at redemption after last year's last-place effort in which he scored only six of a possible 30 points. "His last year's performance was pathetic. ... Right now, he needs coaching," Brooks said. We need to bring back the H-O-R-S-E contest so he can bring something home." Durant won the H-O-R-S-E contest in 2009 and 2010. ... Perkins is just two technical fouls away from a one-game suspension, with 11 through 34 games. "It's going to be very difficult for Perk to not engage in any physical play on the court that referees deem that's a little excessive but he has to," Brooks said.
Is your business heading places? Many companies are too focused on their day-to-day operations and office politics to consider their businesses DNA. This article will help your business identify the signs that you???re lacking in entrepreneurialism, and it should also give you ideas on how you can inject this into your business.
Penny Pinching
When you are less focused on entrepreneurialism and growth, you may find that your business spends its days trying to decrease expenses and bump-up margins. This is certainly something that???s worthwhile doing, but when this is your businesses core focus, it???s usually a sign that the business has less than exciting plans ahead.
When you are reducing expenses make sure they aren???t ones that are going to stutter your business progress. If you find that your spending money on an advertisement and it???s not performing well, then this is an expense you should cut. But, you should probably re-invest that money back into advertising and growing the business ??? rather than simply counting it as a penny saved.
Unwilling To Innovate
Entrepreneurialism is as much about innovation as anything else. If your business constantly has a beady eye on your competitors, and you are only introducing ideas that work for them, then this is probably a great indication that it???s time to get back to the drawing board. Companies that are constantly innovating tend to be perceived better within their market ??? they get first player advantage, they can often make their innovation defensible, and they build up brand equity through positioning themselves as a market leader.
If you are not doing this at the moment, you could be. Entrepreneurialism doesn???t grow on trees, and that???s why you need to employ experts who are able to think creatively. Where do you see your industry in ten years time? You want to be the business that defines where your industry is going.
Although you should aim for industry-defining innovation, it???s easy to make small changes that make a big difference. You could be the first business to move your call centres back to the UK; the first business in your industry to start a corporate blog; the first business to switch to a free phone telephone number; or you could gain heaps of PR through being positioned as the best employer in your industry. Google introduced free meals for their staff, and that worked a treat. What could you do?
Your Brand Is Lacking In Personality
Entrepreneurialism may be rife within your organisation at a product level, but what about at a brand level? What???s your brand doing to stand out from the crowd? Some businesses have developed their brand through delivering a quality product over a sustained period ??? The New York Times, Morgan Stanley and Burberry. Some businesses brand identity will suggest that they are quirky, funny, ethical or even cheap. Once you have decided what you want your brand to say about your business, it is then your turn to augment that impression in the eyes of consumers. If you and your staff don???t know what your brand is about, how can consumers?

A firm of medical negligence solicitors, based in Oxford, has expressed its support for the House of Lords peers who do not want the government to stop medical negligence claimants receiving legal aid.
Baroness Eaton, a Tory peer, explained that the most vulnerable members of society should be provided with a safety net.
Lord Thomas of Gresford, a Lib Dem peer, suggested that instead of abolishing legal aid, it should be dictated by the severity of an injury. He explained that people?s lives are sometimes altered forever because of the negligence of the medical profession and in those circumstances a humane society should cover the cost of pursuing the resultant medical negligence and personal injury claims.
Richard Money-Kyrle, a clinical negligence expert at Darbys Solicitors LLP, said that if the government removes the legal aid provision it?s as good as denying compensation to the least well off members of our society, particularly as the no win no fee system is also being dismantled.
He went on to say that the proposed changes to the no win no fee system will see claimants settling their legal fees out of their personal injury compensation, rather than the current system whereby the person at fault is responsible for the costs. The government?s proposals will leave a lot of people without access to justice, he added.
Lord Wallace of Tankerness, Advocate General and supporter of removing legal aid from medical negligence cases said he would seriously consider ministers? concerns.

February 8, 2012vishyAgriculture, Policy, Poverty Economics,
If you have time, you really should read the complete text of the 2012 Annual Letter from Bill Gates. But I know you live in a multi-screen world with thousands of tweets, status updates, and vids clamoring for your attention every waking moment so I?ll do some of the heavy lifting (sorry, ?curating?)?instead.
The Gates letter covers 4 broad areas ? Innovation in Agriculture, Global Health, US Education, and Foundation Updates. This post includes insights from the first section.
Right now, just over 1 billion people?about 15 percent of the people in the world?live in extreme poverty. On most days, they worry about whether their family will have enough food to eat. There is irony in this, since most of them live and work on farms. The problem is that their farms, which tend to be just a couple acres in size, don?t produce enough food for a family to live on.
Fifteen percent of the world in extreme poverty actually represents a big improvement. Fifty years ago, about 40 percent of the global population was poor. Then, in the 1960s and 1970s, in what is called the ?Green Revolution,? Norman Borlaug and other researchers created new seed varieties for rice, wheat, and maize (corn) that helped many farmers vastly improve their yields.
We have the ability to accelerate this historic progress. But we won?t advance if we don?t continue to fund agricultural innovation, and I am very worried about where those funds will come from in the current economic and political climate. My annual letter this year is an argument for making the choice to keep on helping extremely poor people build self-sufficiency.
Gates Foundation devoted almost $2 billion to helping poor farm families, most of which are led by women, boost their productivity while preserving the land for future generations. Those funds are invested in many areas of innovation, ranging from sustainable land management, to better ways to educate farmers, to connecting farmers to functioning markets
Proportion of farmers in rich countries declining but it?s still high in developing countries (see related graphic).
Only $3 billion per year is spent on researching the seven most important crops. This includes $1.5 billion spent by countries, $1.2 billion by private companies, and $300 million by Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR)
Because farmers plant seeds that give them the highest yields, the diversity of crop varieties in fields is quite limited. This creates a perfect opportunity for disease to spread (e.g. European potato blight epidemic in 1840s, southern corn leaf blight in United States in 1970s).
Currently, 4 million tons of rice are lost to flooding every year in Bangladesh and India. But as farmers in the region adopt Swarna-Sub1 (a new rice seed which is both very productive and can survive in flooded fields), they will grow enough extra rice to feed 30 million people.
There is also an extremely important revolution?based on understanding plant genes ? taking place in the plant sciences. The tools that enable this revolution were created to help cure human diseases. The field of agriculture is just now in the process of figuring out how to take advantage of these tools, but it?s clear that they will greatly accelerate the pace of plant research. It is hard to overstate how valuable it is to have all the incredible tools that are used for human disease to study plants.
Shortly after the Gates Letter, Reuters reported (in this article)?that the Chinese government would be investing in agricultural innovation to improve food security.?The central government estimates that China?s national grain consumption will reach 572.5 million tonnes by 2020. Although China is largely self sufficient in wheat, it is not in soybeans and corn.?In 2010, China returned to importing corn in earnest after years of blocking foreign grain, buying a record 1.57 million tonnes, up 18 times from the previous year because domestic production couldn?t keep up with demand.

One shocking recent statistic, released by the American Academy of Pediatrics in fall 2010, is that from 1999 to 2006, hospitalizations for eating disorders increased sharply ? 119% ? for children younger than 12 years old. The academy also noted significant increases in prevalence of eating disorders among minorities and males.
I spoke to Ovideo Bermudez, MD,? medical director of child and adolescent services at Denver?s Eating Recovery Center and a board member of The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA). The 119 percent rise in hospitalizations for such young children, Dr. Bermudez said, is ?likely to be a good proxy for a rise in incidence,? meaning that as incredible as it sounds, it probably accurately reflects the increase in the number of kids under 12 who are suffering from eating disorders, especially, as Dr. Bermudez points out, when you consider how carefully third-party reimbursing organizations scrutinize hospital stays, and how reluctant they are to okay them.
The reasons for this scary rise in children?s hospitalizations, says Dr. Bermudez, are complex, the result of a variety of forces that have created a ?perfect storm very likely related to changes in the environment and changes in people?s experience.?
Here?s how Dr. Bermudez believes this ?perfect storm? has taken shape: Imagine that we can divide children our society into two groups, one that is genetically protected from eating disorders (meaning they have no family history of them), and another that is ?genetically vulnerable? (meaning there is a family history of such disorders). Suppose a child in the latter group grows up in a ?protective environment,? let?s say where there is no dieting peer group, no obsession with fashion and popular culture, or perhaps no obsessively dieting parents. Such a child is not likely to develop an eating disorder.? ?If that environment is altered and becomes a ?promotive environment,?? explains Dr. Bermudez, ?even someone who is more genetically protected? might be affected. The child who is really going to be adversely affected, though, and who is most likely to develop an eating disorder is the genetically vulnerable child exposed to the promotive environment.
Dr. Bermudez speculates that what we?re seeing now is a cultural shift from a ?protected? environment to a ?promotive? environment and notes, ?in a lot of ways we?re seeing the same thing in other areas: childhood obesity, diabetes, and respiratory illnesses. My sense is that we are changing, the earth is supporting seven billion of us and that brings all kinds of added challenges, not only from a physical, and environment standpoint, but from an emotional and socio-cultural point of view.?
Dr. Bermudez cited 2010 findings from the American Psychological Association?s annual Stress in America, survey, which found that the number one stressor on families is their financial situations, and that nearly half of all children reported feeling saddened or worried about family problems. He calls it ?stress by proxy,? meaning that kids ?are not living the financial difficulties to the extent that their parents are, ?but they were picking up the stress because we don?t live in isolation.? He adds, ?the world in general, is becoming a more stressful place to grow up, in. Everyone has access to mass media and there are things being promoted that aren?t healthy, about body image, fitness, about the tolerance of violence?..and we know that exposure matters.?
?In addition to be bombarded by potentially triggering mass media messages, kids face other challenges: ?social competition, pressure to perform, to be multitalented, and engaged in so many things,? adds Dr. Bermudez. ?The pace of change and the level of tension in our society, he believes, are creating a culture that?s very difficult for our kids to get a stake in.? The message: ?If you?re not a super go-getter, you may not make it,? and not everybody takes that message well.
So what can parents do? ?First of all,? says Dr. Bermudez, ?alleviate stress for yourself, and for your family. Maybe you do with less: work two jobs instead of three, and take care of yourself in appropriate ways.? (The American Psychological Association Stress in America report notes that managing stress levels, eating right, and getting enough sleep and exercise are key.)?
Another thing: ?Without kind of pushing your kid outside of the space within the bell curve, you want your kid to skew toward the side of less intensity, and fewer expectations of immediate performance.? When he speaks, Dr. Bermudez tells audiences, ?I?m so grateful that a good chunk of my childhood was in Cuba, playing in the streets and flying kites?I didn?t take any lessons?now kids take everything, and if they?re not doing that, they?re out of the mix.?Instead of trying to cram in sports, arts, academic and enrichment programs all at once, Dr. Bermudez suggests rotating them ?rather than all of them all the time at all costs.?
Another way you can help counteract an increasingly ?promotive? environment is to, as Marcia and I advise in our book, model healthy attitudes and behaviors when it comes to food, eating, shape and size, and make exercise an enjoyable and regular part of your lives.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Some unknown kids with superpowers have nudged out the world's most famous teen wizard at the weekend box office.
The 20th Century Fox release "Chronicle," featuring a relatively unknown cast as youths who gain telekinetic abilities, debuted as the No. 1 movie with $22 million.
Sunday studio estimates put "Harry Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe's ghost story "The Woman in Black," released by CBS Films, just behind with a $21 million opening.
The results were close enough that the No. 1 and 2 rankings could switch when final numbers are released Monday.
The two movies had healthy starts considering it was Super Bowl weekend, when few people go to theaters on Sunday because of the big game.
Each movie landed in the all-time top-10 list for Super Bowl weekend debuts, which is headed by the $31.1 million opening for 2008's "Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert," according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.
"To have two movies over $20 million on a Super Bowl weekend is really strong," said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "If the Super Bowl is as close as these two movies, that'll be a really good Super Bowl."
Both movies packed in solid teen and early-20s crowds, Hollywood's bread-and-butter audience that had been giving movies a pass during a box-office slide late last year.
"Chronicle" was "designed and made for a younger demographic. That demographic has been the one that's been missing from theaters," said Chris Aronson, head of distribution for 20th Century Fox. "There's something very unique and very innovative about this movie that they got wind of. There was a lot of pre-release chatter on social media that made a connection with this audience."
From first-time director Josh Trank, "Chronicle" relies on documentary-style, hand-held filming techniques to tell the story of three teens (Dane DeHaan, Michael B. Jordan and Alex Russell) who put their newfound superpowers to work in mischievous and eventually dark ways.
In "The Woman in Black," his first starring role since last summer's "Harry Potter" finale, Radcliffe plays a widowed lawyer beset by ghostly apparitions at the remote home of a recently deceased client.
While the audience for "Chronicle" was 55 percent male, the crowds for "Woman in Black" were 59 percent female, drawn by heartthrob Radcliffe and the lure of an old-fashioned Gothic ghost story.
Both films far exceeded industry expectations for the weekend.
"In retrospect, you look at Daniel Radcliffe, one of the biggest stars and one of the hardest-working kids in show business, you have a very well-made PG-13 scary movie," said Steven Friedlander, head of distribution for CBS Films. "The only surprise, really, is why are we surprised? Those are all the elements for making a hit."
The previous weekend's top movie, Liam Neeson's Alaska survival tale "The Grey," slipped to No. 3 with $9.5 million, raising its domestic total to $34.6 million.
At No. 4 with an $8.5 million debut was another Alaska adventure, Universal Pictures' family film "Big Miracle," with Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski aiming to save three whales trapped by Arctic ice.
Pop star Madonna's drama "W.E." had a modest opening in limited release, pulling in $45,000 in four theaters. Directed and co-written by Madonna, "W.E." blends the real-life romance of Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough) and Britain's King Edward VIII (James D'Arcy) with a fictional modern story of a Manhattan woman (Abbie Cornish) in an unhappy marriage.
Hollywood finished the first month of 2012 with strong revenues that are running well ahead of last year's lackluster receipts. According to Hollywood.com, domestic revenues through Sunday totaled $967.5 million, up 14 percent from the same point last year.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

MOSCOW ? Tens of thousands of Russians flooded downtown Moscow on Saturday to demand an end to Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's rule, braving sub-zero temperatures to keep the protest movement alive one month before a presidential election that Putin is still expected to win.
The protest ? which drew 120,000 people, according to organizers ? was the third mass demonstration since Putin's party won a parliamentary election Dec. 4 with the help of what appeared to be widespread fraud.
The election and Putin's presumptuous decision to reclaim the presidency proved the last straw for Russians increasingly unhappy with the creeping authoritarianism during his 12-year rule. The protest rallies ? which have brought together liberals, leftists and nationalists ? are the biggest in Russia since the the demonstrations 20 years ago that led to the collapse of the Soviet Union.
On Saturday, people wearing the white ribbons that have become the symbol of the protest movement and chanting "Russia Without Putin" braved temperatures as low as minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 20 degrees Celsius) as they marched about one kilometer (less than a mile) to a square across the river from the Kremlin where their rally was held. Thousands of police monitored the peaceful protest without intervening.
"There are now so many of us that they cannot arrest us all," said 56-year-old protester Alexander Zelensky.
He and his wife, Alyona Karimova, said they had begun preparations to emigrate to Canada in the fall, but then changed their minds and decided to stay in the hope that Russia will eventually move toward democracy.
"This is going to be a gradual process, but we believe it will eventually lead to democracy and free elections," said Karimova, who was wearing a long mink coat and a sign around her neck telling Putin to return to his native St. Petersburg.
An anti-Putin protest also took place in St. Petersburg on Saturday, drawing 5,000 people, and smaller rallies were held in several dozen other cities across Russia.
A separate rally in Moscow in support of Putin drew no more than 20,000 people. Most of them were teachers, municipal workers, employees of state-owned companies or trade union activists, who had come with co-workers on buses provided by their employers.
Most of the pro-Putin protesters were reluctant to speak to journalists. Yekaterina, a 25-year-old postal worker who gave only her first name out of fear she would be fired, said she had been ordered to attend the rally and was told she would be paid as if it were a work day.
The anti-Putin protests have been driven by members of the educated and urban middle class.
Putin has ignored many of their demands, including for a repeat election, but he has sought to assuage their anger by making vague promises to introduce liberal reforms and to guarantee a fair presidential vote on March 4.
The protest leaders hope to stage another rally a week before the election to keep up the pressure on Putin.
To counter the protests, Putin has focused on consolidating his core support group of blue-collar workers, farmers, public servants and the elderly. He also has tried to discredit the protesters by casting their leaders as Western lackeys working to weaken Russia.
The opposition has also drawn some criticism for including Communists and nationalists in its ranks. Separately from the massive march, Saturday also saw a small Moscow rally by anti-Putin figures who want to keep their distance. But the thrust of their demands was the same as at the larger gathering.
Putin talks about stability ... we don't need the stability of the cemetery," longtime dissident Valeria Novodvorskaya told the rally of about 250.
The presidential race pits Putin against three leaders of parliamentary parties, who have run against him in the past, and one fresh face: the billionaire owner of the New Jersey Nets basketball team, Mikhail Prokhorov. Prokhorov joined Saturday's protest, but did not speak from the stage.
None of the contenders is expected to pose any serious challenge to Putin, whose ratings are now hovering just below the 50 percent needed for a first-round victory. If Putin fails to win an outright victory, he would face a runoff three weeks later, most likely against Communist Party chief Gennady Zyuganov, a rival he could easily defeat.
Protesters at Saturday's rally denounced the race as illegitimate, pointing to the tight controls Putin has imposed over the political scene that have destroyed all genuine political competition.
Grigory Yavlinsky, leader of the opposition Yabloko party who was barred from the presidential race, said the fight will not end after the election. "We are defending the future of our country," he said from the stage. "Our foes will soon see that it's only the beginning."
As the afternoon sun started to fade, the rally ended with the call of "Not a Single Vote for Putin" and demands for legal reforms that would open the way for fair political competition and for new parliamentary and presidential elections. The protesters also demanded the release of political prisoners and punishment for those involved in the vote-rigging.
Before heading home, the protesters released white balloons ? a symbol of peaceful protest.
