At some point in our lives, practically all of us have said something along the lines of, ?I think I?m going to grow a little herb garden.? The idea just seems so lovely, and fresh herbs smell delightful and make everything taste better. The actual percentage of us who follow through on that grand green idea, however, is admittedly pretty low. So today, we?ve pulled together some points of inspiration to get you flexing that green thumb.
First, there?s the simple, classic indoor herb garden like the one show above. Depending on what fragrances you?d like to introduce into your kitchen, living room, or whichever space will be hosting the herbs, and depending on what sorts of dishes you?d like to prepare with them, select three or four types to start. Cook a lot of Italian food? Consider oregano, basil and chives to get started.
Seed packets and starter kits are available at most grocery stores, home improvement megaplexes like Home Depot and Lowes, and in the garden section at Target and Wal-Mart; gathering up all the goods you need can be as simple as taking five minutes to walk down a different aisle during a typical weekly errand. Once you?ve followed the instructions and watched your herbs start to grow after letting the kiddos help with the planting, consider asking for their help in pulling together recipes and preparing meals. Helping with an herb garden can actually be a great first step in teaching your kids where food comes from and striking up conversations about how the farm-to-table cycle works in the world at large.
If cooking isn?t part of the plan, consider a terrarium. Container gardening has risen in popularity in recent years, and for good reason: live indoor greenery isn?t just pretty to look at, but it also quite literally purifies the air we breathe, and its presence alone has been said to decrease stress. Even if you?re worried that you can?t make anything grow no matter what you do, companies like James Modern create and ship pre-made terrariums to take the guesswork completely out of the equation (and when truly in doubt, there?s always cactus).
Whether you end up consuming the fruit of your labor or not, giving your children at least a partial obligation to care for a living thing ? even something as simple as a pot of herbs ? can go a long way toward instilling confidence, discipline and a sense of responsibility, contribution and self-worth. Considering the elements of fresher air, stress-reducing home decor and maybe a little something extra come dinnertime, and that?s time well spent.
